Here at Newgate we are trialing a new cardboard pot and reusable tray brought to us by local manufacturers Pennine products.
This autumn we are growing all our autumn/winter hanging basket plants in the cardboard pots, with the aim that customers can plant the pot directly into the compost in a hanging basket/container, and they will begin to degrade almost immediately, encouraging strong root development and healthy growth with the benefit of no plastic to dispose of!
The reusable trays will be available to take home and return to the nursery to be reused so no waste.
Plants grown in the new pots will be available from September.

Smiths Arm, Lea (Preston)
The Smiths Arms in lea won the “Best Pub in Bloom” last year with hanging baskets from Newgate!
John (the landlord) came to us early last year wanting stunning but low maintenance hanging baskets/hay racks. We used a combination of trailing allumination apricot begonias and brachycombe in one set to get the lemon and powdery blue colours whilst in the others we used orange trailing begonias and deep blue trailing verbena.
The baskets flowered until late September and required no deadheading. The great thing about begonias is they will perform even in poor weather or shade.
Pop in to the nursery today and we can design a basket to suit your needs!
Petunia night sky is a result of the latest plant breeding techniques.
This trailing petunia has a lovely habit with stunning purple and white flowers. Each flower is slightly different from the last and resembles a starry night sky.
This plant is great for pots or baskets and at only £2.99 or any 4 for £10 it’s more than affordable.
Flowers all summer if dead headed and fed with chempack no 4 which is the best high potash feed for all your flowering plants this summer.
