Viburnum Tinus Spirit C15

Description

Viburnum Tinus Spirit is a stellar choice for gardeners seeking year-round interest and reliable performance. This evergreen shrub delivers elegant dark, glossy foliage throughout the year, providing structure and backbone to any garden border. From late autumn through spring, it produces wonderfully fragrant clusters of white flowers that attract pollinators and fill the garden with a delicate perfume. As the flowers fade, striking blue-black berries emerge, creating an additional focal point that persists well into winter.

The Spirit variety is particularly valued for its compact, upright growth habit, making it ideal for smaller gardens or as part of a mixed shrub planting. It typically reaches around 2 to 3 metres in height with a spread of 1.5 to 2 metres, though this can be controlled through light pruning. The combination of winter flowers, evergreen foliage, and ornamental berries makes it an exceptional performer when much else in the garden is dormant.

Growing Viburnum Tinus Spirit is straightforward. It thrives in most soil types, including chalk and clay, and prefers a position in full sun to partial shade where flowering will be most prolific. Once established, it is remarkably low-maintenance and drought tolerant, requiring minimal feeding or fussing. It is notably hardy, withstanding temperatures well below freezing without damage.

Pruning is rarely necessary beyond removing any dead or diseased wood, though you can trim it lightly after flowering if you wish to maintain a tidier shape. The shrub is also relatively pest and disease free, adding to its reliability as a garden plant. Its fragrant winter flowers and colourful berries make it particularly attractive to garden wildlife, supporting birds and pollinators during the quieter months.

Whether you are looking to create winter interest, add evergreen structure, or simply enjoy a shrub that delivers year-round appeal with minimal effort, Viburnum Tinus Spirit is an excellent investment that will reward you for decades.
