Miscanthus Kleenex Silberspinne

Description

Miscanthus Kleenex Silberspinne is a striking modern ornamental grass that brings year-round structure and movement to any garden scheme. This exceptional cultivar is prized for its silvery feathery plumes that emerge in late summer and persist through autumn and winter, creating a stunning focal point when many other plants are fading. The fine, arching foliage is blue-green during the growing season, turning warm bronze and copper tones as temperatures drop, providing interest across all four seasons. Reaching 150-180cm in height with a spread of around 60-90cm, it’s substantial enough to make an impact without overwhelming smaller gardens.

This Japanese miscanthus variety is exceptionally hardy and well-suited to UK gardens, thriving in full sun to light shade. It prefers well-drained soil and, once established, is remarkably low-maintenance and drought-tolerant, making it an excellent choice for water-conscious gardeners. Plant in spring for the best establishment, and choose a location where it can catch morning light to truly showcase those glittering plumes. It’s not fussy about soil type and actually performs well in average to poor soils where more delicate plants might struggle.

Care is refreshingly straightforward. In spring, simply cut the stems back hard to ground level before new growth emerges, ideally in March or April. This annual tidying will keep the plant looking neat and vigorous. No feeding is required unless your soil is particularly poor, and watering is only necessary during prolonged dry spells in the first growing season. The clump slowly expands but rarely needs division unless you wish to propagate it.

Gardeners love Miscanthus Kleenex Silberspinne for its architectural quality, seasonal colour changes, and the way light plays through its feathery plumes on winter mornings. It’s perfect for contemporary gardens, prairie-style plantings, and mixed borders where it adds textural contrast to shrubs and perennials. The dried stems also provide valuable shelter for overwintering insects, making it both beautiful and wildlife-friendly.
