Description

Hydrangea Paniculata Polar Bear is a magnificent deciduous shrub that brings spectacular seasonal interest to any garden. This impressive variety produces large, cone-shaped flower panicles that emerge creamy white in mid-summer, gradually shifting to soft pink as autumn approaches. The extended flowering period, lasting from July right through to the first frosts, means you’ll enjoy months of continuous colour and texture in the garden. With a mature height and spread of 2 to 2.5 metres, it makes an excellent specimen plant or a striking focal point in mixed borders.

What makes Polar Bear particularly reliable is its consistent flowering habit year after year. Unlike some hydrangeas, this variety flowers on new growth, so there’s no need to worry about accidentally pruning away next year’s blooms. The sturdy stems hold the substantial flower heads proudly upright, even in wind or rain, and the dried flowerheads retain their architectural beauty well into winter, providing interest long after they’ve faded to pale brown.

Growing Polar Bear is straightforward provided you choose the right location. Position it in full sun to partial shade, with at least four to six hours of direct sunlight daily for best flowering. It’s adaptable to most soil types but performs best in moist, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system, and mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser to promote vigorous growth.

Pruning is simple and can actually improve the plant’s performance. In late winter or early spring, cut back the previous year’s growth by about one-third to encourage bushier, more abundant flowering. You can be quite bold with your secateurs, as this shrub responds well to hard pruning and will quickly fill out again. Deadheading spent flowers throughout autumn can encourage later blooms, though many gardeners prefer to leave them for their winter interest.

Polar Bear is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a low-maintenance shrub that delivers season-long colour and doesn’t require specialist knowledge to grow well. It’s equally at home in contemporary gardens, cottage borders, or grown in large containers on a sunny patio. Bees and pollinators are attracted to the flowers, making it a wildlife-friendly addition too.
