Euonymous (Pot Grown)

Euonymus japonicus took over where box left off: the same small-leaved, dense, evergreen structure that clips into sharp formal lines — edging paths, framing borders, replacing a hedge that blight took — but immune to the two problems that make box a gamble. It earns its keep on tough sites too, comfortably handling salt wind, pollution and partial shade.

WHICH SIZE SHOULD I CHOOSE?

For low formal hedges and edging up to knee height, start small at 4 per metre — the plants knit into a continuous line within a couple of seasons and clip beautifully from the start. For a taller hedge, choose larger plants at 3 per metre. Growth is a measured 20–40cm a year, which is exactly why a clipped Euonymus hedge holds its shape with so little work.

All heights are measured from the top of the pot to the top of the plant.

GROWING CONDITIONS

Full sun or partial shade in any drained soil. Clip in late spring and again in late summer for a formal finish — little and often keeps it dense to the ground. Watch for euonymus scale (small white insects on stems); caught early it wipes or prunes off easily, and a fed, airy hedge rarely gets it.

PLANTING & AFTERCARE

A generous hole, broken-up base, bone meal, rootball level with the surface, firm in and soak. Deep water weekly through the first summer and a spring feed each year. For formal edging, run a string line when you plant — Euonymus rewards straight rows like nothing else we grow.
