We grow the vast majority of our hedging ourselves, which means the plant that arrives is the plant we’ve raised outdoors in North West weather, at honest prices with no middleman. And every plant in our range has a job:
Cherry laurel — the classic fast evergreen screen, and our biggest seller. Portuguese laurel — the refined laurel: darker, neater, hardier. Leylandii — nothing screens faster, if you’ll commit to the trim. Griselinia — fresh apple-green, and superb by the coast. Elaeagnus — the problem-solver for windy, salty and difficult sites. Euonymus — the blight-free replacement for box, made for neat formal lines. Photinia Red Robin — the showpiece, flushing brilliant red with every trim. Yew — the aristocrat: razor-sharp formal lines that last centuries. And pleached trees — the “hedge on stilts” that screens above fence height where no hedge can reach.

Leylandii is the fastest at up to 75–90cm a year, but cherry laurel is the one we recommend most often — 30–60cm a year, evergreen, and only one trim a year instead of two. Griselinia and Elaeagnus aren't far behind at 30–45cm and 30–60cm a year respectively.
It depends on species and size: as a rule of thumb, 3 per metre for pot-grown laurel, Griselinia, Elaeagnus and Photinia; 4 per metre for low formal Euonymus; 2 per metre for large rootballed plants and yew at bigger sizes; one every 60cm for Leylandii; and one per frame width for pleached trees. Pot-grown hedging can be planted at any time of year as long as the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged. Bare root and rootballed hedging is planted in the dormant season, November to March — which is also when it's cheapest to buy.
Bare root plants are lifted from the field with no soil — the cheapest option, ideal for long runs, winter only. Rootballed plants are lifted with a ball of soil wrapped in hessian, letting us supply large, mature plants for an instant hedge. Pot grown plants have an established root system in the container and can go in the ground year-round.
Cherry laurel is the most popular — dense, evergreen and quick to reach 2m and beyond. Leylandii gets there fastest if you'll trim twice a year, Griselinia gives a fresher, brighter screen, and if you're being overlooked from above, pleached trees screen at first-floor height where no ordinary hedge can.
Yew and Euonymus hold a clipped shape with the least effort — their steady growth means one trim (or two light ones) a year keeps them immaculate. Among the faster growers, cherry laurel, Portuguese laurel and Elaeagnus all stay tidy on a single annual trim. The only hedge we'd call high-maintenance is Leylandii, which must be trimmed twice a year without fail.
