Growing at up to 75–90cm a year, it will turn a line of modest plants into a full evergreen wall quicker than any other hedge in Britain — which is why it remains the go-to choice when privacy is urgent: a new fence-height gap, an overlooked garden, a road that needs blocking out.
Leylandii’s dense, feathery foliage makes a superb windbreak and sound barrier, it grows in almost any soil in sun or light shade, and plant-for-plant it’s one of the cheapest routes to a tall screen you can buy.
It asks one thing in return: commitment to the trim. Two cuts a year keeps Leylandii dense, healthy and exactly the size you want, forever. Left alone, Leylandii is a forest tree that can pass 20 metres — which is how neighbour disputes start. Trimmed twice a year it stays exactly the height you choose indefinitely. As a rule of thumb, keeping an evergreen hedge around 2 metres also keeps you clear of high-hedge complaints under the Anti-social Behaviour Act.
This is the crucial thing to know: no. Unlike laurel, Leylandii will not regrow from brown, leafless wood — cut back into it and the bare patch is permanent. Trim little and often, always staying within the green growth. If you've inherited an overgrown Leylandii hedge, come and talk to us before cutting.
Excellent — its dense foliage filters wind rather than deflecting it, making it one of the best living windbreaks and sound barriers for exposed gardens, paddocks and boundaries along busy roads.
The usual culprits are cypress aphid (feeding damage that browns patches from the inside, typically in summer), trimming into old wood, or drought stress on young plants. Aphid damage often regreens over a season or two if the hedge is fed and the aphids controlled; brown from over-cutting won't. If you're local, bring a sprig in and we'll tell you which one you've got.
