Stand a clipped Ilex crenata next to a clipped box and most gardeners can’t tell them apart β which is precisely the point. When blight or box tree caterpillar takes a parterre, an edged path or a pair of clipped balls, crenata is the like-for-like answer: same scale of leaf, same density, same appetite for precise shaping, none of the vulnerability. And despite being a holly, it’s completely smooth β no prickles anywhere.
WHICH SIZE SHOULD I CHOOSE?
For edging and low formal hedges, start with smaller plants at 4 per metre β or 5 per metre where you want the tightest line to close fastest, box-style. For taller hedges, larger plants at 3 per metre. Like box, crenata grows a measured 10β20cm a year, so if you’re replacing an established hedge, buying close to the finished size is worth the premium β this isn’t a plant you wait for.
All heights are measured from the top of the pot to the top of the plant.
GROWING CONDITIONS
Sun or partial shade, in reasonable garden soil β ideally neutral to slightly acid β that holds moisture without waterlogging. The one honest caveat with crenata: it dislikes dry, chalky ground, where leaves yellow and growth stalls. Improve thin soil with organic matter, mulch after planting, and keep it watered while establishing; if your soil is genuinely chalky or your site coastal and windswept, our Euonymus gives the same formal look with a tougher constitution β ask us and we’ll advise honestly. Clip once or twice a year; it takes detailed shaping, topiary and cloud pruning better than anything else we grow.
PLANTING & AFTERCARE
Plant with the rootball level in well-improved soil with bone meal worked through, firm in and soak. Mulch generously β crenata’s shallow roots appreciate the moisture and the even temperature β and water deeply through the first two summers. Feed each spring with an ericaceous or balanced fertiliser. For formal edging, plant to a string line and clip little and often from the first year; early light trims are what build the dense, box-like surface.
